Yes, Mr. Dan, Black Friday has come. Can I call you Steely?

Here we are, the biggest beer shopping day of the year. No doubt you’ve read Josh Noel’s Tribune article on establishments that have had issues with Goose Island’s policies of Bourbon County Stout; so they have “alternate celebrations” with other brewers’ beers. I have tried to cover them all. It comes to 62 Friday events so far.

I sure hope I have heard from everybody who has events this weekend. I may not be able to keep up in this article, but I will have any additions in my Beeronaut Calendar app first.

For many of these places, I only had notice of the events from the Goose Island web site, which did not have all the starting times. While it’s most likely these places will open for Black Friday as usual, some could open earlier, others may not start their events until evening. Be sure to check on your favorite locals.

In the midst of this shopping frenzy, we welcome two new establishments: Second City Meadery opens Friday, and Cultivate by Forbidden Root has its opening Saturday, taking over the former Band of Bohemia gastropub.

Black Friday is here once again, and with it…two new big, thick, yummy, barrel-aged stouts are coming your way. Here’s everything you need to know to score your bottles, try them on tap, and have a fantastic break from holiday shopping.
THE BEERS:
1) Tranquil Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout: Dark as midnight and rich as all get-out, Tranquil is our new, non-adjuncted barrel-aged stout. With this beer, we wanted to let the barrels really shine without any additional sweetness from adjuncts. A blend of imperial stout aged for 22 months in Buffalo Trace and 16 months in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, this stout is everything we’ve dreamed of brewing since long before Riverlands opened. 22oz bottles, 14.5% ABV, $25 per bottle, limit two per person.
2) Barrel-Aged Gravity Void Imperial Stout: Perhaps you recall our original Gravity Void imperial stout? We took our rich imperial stout base and added hazelnut, cocoa nibs, and cinnamon to create a truly delicious pastry stout. Aged in a blend of 22 month Buffalo Trace and 16 month Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, the result is a boozy concoction of lush waves of chocolate with wonderful notes of hazelnut and cinnamon. 22oz bottles, 14.5% ABV, $25 per bottle, limit two per person.
Pre-orders for these beers are underway on our webstore. There is a hard limit of 2 bottles of EACH beer per person. Any orders with more than 2 bottles will be cancelled and refunded.
All orders will be available for pick-up starting on Friday, November 26 at 11am and MUST be picked up no later than Sunday, December 5th at 9pm. Please select your pickup date and time during the checkout process. Any bottles not picked up by December 5 will be cancelled, refunded, and sold the following week.
Proxies WILL BE ALLOWED. All proxies must show a forwarded email receipt from the purchaser and have a valid 21-and-over ID.

12PM: BA Coffee Vanilla Sleepy Bear: Imperial stout aged in Blanton’s barrels – 13.2% We took a select run of Blanton’s bourbon barrels and blended them to create this variant. Utilizing our buddies at Ten Drops coffee we had them custom roast super rich and chocolaty beans from Chiapas, Mexico. Between resting on those and the copious addition of vanilla this is one hell of a awesome variant to this years lineup.
Saturday, Nov 27th
11AM: Triple Barrel Sleepy Bear: Imperial stout aged in Buffalo Trace, then W.L. Weller and finished in VSOP brandy barrels – 15.1%. This is one incredible beer! Our first time releasing a triple barrel aged variant of Sleepy Bear. This was then finished with cacao nibs and vanilla. Coming up this Black Friday, we have a really exciting release! Night of the Jaguar is a dark chocolate ale brewed in collaboration with our good friends at Dark Matter Coffee and Sleep Walk Chocolateria.
Back in May, as the world started to re-open, we went down to Mexico City for a week with the well caffeinated mice over at Dark Matter and Sleep Walk to visit their chocolate partners at La Rifa Chocolateria. This Dark Chocolate Ale is the result of poking around the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon, visiting the floating islands Mexico City is built upon, eating extremely well, and generally being thrilled to experience the planet again.
Multivariate additions of Mexican Drinking Chocolate, Trinitario cocoa nibs grown in Chiapas, and chocolate malt lend layered and nuanced chocolate expressions of peach, orchard fruits, and tamarind alongside classic bakers chocolate notes. Heirloom Blue Bolita corn from Oaxaca adds a subtle, rustic nod and sense of place while late additions of honey and Piloncillo sugar purchased in the street markets of CDMX lightens the body and adds a final, floral flourish to this Dark Chocolate ale. Overall; luscious, velveteen and comforting – like falling asleep to the warm caress of the soft crackles and pops of a well worn Nick Drake album.
Releases on nitro draft and in 16oz cans to-go this Friday at noon and later that evening we’ll be having a release party with the Dark Matter crew starting at about 6pm.

Forbidden Root Brewery is excited to announce the opening of its second Chicago location: Cultivate by Forbidden Root in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood. Cultivate, the new restaurant and brewery, which builds and expands upon Forbidden Root’s celebrated approach to brewing and its elevated, rustic, seasonal fare, is set to open its doors on November 27. In the words of Forbidden Root’s senior alchemist, Randy Mosher: “We aim to fully embrace our innovative brewing methods and pursue our love of botanical ingredients, expanding the nature of what beer can be.”
In addition, Cultivate’s kitchen will be helmed by executive chef Carlos Cruz, whose opening menu will include a few of the Forbidden Root favorites: the Forbidden Root Burger, Duck & Dumplings and Cheddar& Crackers, as well as a host of newly created dishes for Cultivate’s guests.
Two elements will drive the beer program at Cultivate: “We will use non-standard fermentations, including farmhouse yeast strains from various parts of the world and mixed cultures of traditional brewer’s yeast including specialty strains such as Brettanomyces,” explains head brewer Nick Williams. “The second element is the use of wood to age and flavor beer, from full-sized “foeder” tanks to wine and spirits barrels to custom-toasted chips—we will open with four Cultivate-specific beers.”

Neckbeard Nectar Release at Transient is Sunday, November 28! (The Beer Cellar will be doing their release on Friday)
Per tradition, Neckbeard Nectar will be releasing both in the Transient taproom and at The Beer Cellar locations over Thanksgiving weekend! Both releases are completely separate; i.e. if you reserve bottles at one location that is the location you must go to pick up your orders. As usual, this is a rotating adjuncted (or sometimes not) stout, and we have a couple bangers for you this year.

Neckbeard Nectar; Imperial Stout with Coconut and Vanilla, 12.5%
Elijah Craig Neckbeard Nectar; Imperial Stout aged 13 months in Elijah Craig 11 Year Bourbon Barrels, 13.5%
Maple Bourbon Neckbeard Nectar; Imperial Stout aged in Blis Maple Bourbon Barrels with Tugboat Coffee and Vanilla Beans, 13%
Neckbeard Life; Maple Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout blended with Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Rye Barleywine, 13%
Pre-orders start Wednesday, November 24 at 3 PM EST

Come out for our General Knowledge trivia night with Baig of Tricks Entertainment and join your host as they quiz your teams through two full hours of general knowledge trivia, including awesome themed bonus rounds and music rounds!
While we’re testing your wit, Cellar Door will be keeping you fueled up an incredible food menu and delicious drinks all night, PLUS the top teams will win bragging rights and prizes, so bring your friends, family, and even your enemies (if they’re good at trivia) to increase your chances of winning.
