I’m getting in another in my series of reviews for the Black Is Beautiful worldwide collaboration. Reiterating: this collaboration was suggested by the Black-owned Weathered Souls Brewing of San Antonio, TX, as a way of raising awareness and support for the Black community. Nearly 1,000 brewers in all 50 states and in several countries have adapted their base imperial stout recipe.
This is my fourth Black Is Beautiful review. Currently, I have two more to go, but I am hoping to arrange a trade for some of the remainders from the four packs I bought.
This beer pours dark, as expected, kicking up a short, but stubborn tan head. There’s a bit of oily viscosity around the glass. I can’t pick up much smell out of this one; mainly a bit of roast malt and some tart notes. The taste has same stout roast, but it’s more tart than other Black Is Beautiful beers I’ve had. I think the blackberries were added in secondary fermentation, and their sugar got fermented out, leaving some fruit tartness. Yes, this is a bit of a sour beer, like an exaggerated Guinness. Nice if that’s what you’re expecting.
Side Note: I had to slow up in my pace for reviewing and writing about these beers this week, because I was scheduled for my annual colonoscopy on Tuesday. I botched my prep so I’ll have to reschedule for November. But I’m mentioning this as a reminder, since I’m suspecting a lot of my readers are somewhere around the same age that I am: get yourself checked out down there.
