From Kris Bryant trade to Cubs pitch lab: Prospect Caleb Kilian hones his arsenal

MESA, Ariz. – Caleb Kilian was on his way out to throw a bullpen when he noticed he had a missed call from Giants farm director Kyle Haines.

Killian called back, and the news from Haines that late-July day reversed the pitcher’s plans.

“I couldn’t throw my bullpen. I couldn’t go to the game,” Kilian recounted in a conversation with the Sun-Times on Wednesday. “I left like an hour later, said goodbye to everybody, all my friends, and then moved out of my apartment and was in Tennessee the next day.”

Kilian, along with outfield prospect Alexander Canario, had been traded to the Cubs for Kris Bryant.

While Cubs fans reeled from last summer’s trade deadline, which sent stars Anthony Rizzo, Javy Baez and Bryant to New York and San Francisco, a whirlwind week swept up Kilian and dropped him onto the Cubs’ Double-A affiliate. And though the timeline for the Cubs’ next championship window remains uncertain, recent acquisitions like Kilian are already showing promise.

Kilian inspired headlines in November when he pitched six perfect innings in the Arizona Fall League championship game. That shining performance was an early step in a process that, for Kilian, includes two new pitch grips.

In Killian’s first week in Tennessee, his new club outlined the changes they wanted him to work toward. But it was still mid-season, so the Cubs didn’t want him to make big adjustments just yet, Kilian said.

Those changes would wait until Kilian was ramping up for the fall league, when he could get into the pitch lab.

“And I’d use the fall league as an opportunity to kind of figure them out,” he said.

Kilian, however, doesn’t attribute his championship performance to his new pitch grips. Instead, he points to his motivation to bounce back from an earlier poor outing and a collective drive to win it all.

About two weeks ago, his changeup started “really clicking.”

“It would flash sometimes during catch,” Kilian said. “But, overall, it was like 80 percnet of them were bad, 20 percent are probably good. And now it’s consistently looking much better. It’s a really good feeling.”

Kilian had been throwing his changeup with a “vulcan” grip, which is basically the vulcan salute from Star Trek, wrapped around a baseball. He described his old changeup as “very below average.”

In the pitch lab, the Cubs identified a circle change, with a grip that creates a circle between the thumb and pointer finger, as Kilian’s best version of the pitch, creating the action they were looking for.

Kilian also tweaked his curveball grip, digging the tip of his pointer finger into the ball, rather than laying it flatter for a more traditional curve.

The Cubs this offseason launched a new training program that opened its Sloan Park facilities in Mesa to interested prospects. After the fall league, Kilian was one of the 30 or so players, as estimated by vice president of player development Jared Banner, who took part in offseason camp.

Now in minicamp, Kilian is focused on maintaining the progress he’s made in recent months.

“Keep this changeup going,” he said. “That was a huge focus of mine this offseason. And then execute, perform well, get stronger, stay healthy.”

Questions still loom about Chicago Bulls as second half opens up

The Chicago Bulls are in an interesting situation heading into the second half of the season. Currently, the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Therefore, it would not be realistic to dismiss them as contenders based on their performance this season. However, there are still several unanswered questions about the team.

For example, this season, the Chicago Bulls have not beaten an elite team. Additionally, they have an embarrassing record against top teams in each conference. In the past, when the team had the likes of Michael Jordan in their team sheet, their record against top teams was much better. This poor record is obviously a massive worry because the team has to work their way through virtually all these top teams if they are to attain their goals.

Additionally, their unique offensive approach could also hinder them from winning in the playoffs. For example, DeMar DeRozan has been playing amazing basketball this season. But the truth is iso-ball is not always effective at the playoffs. Their biggest undoing is that they don’t have an interior defense.

This weakness was visible when they came up against the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia Sixers. In the games, Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo proved to be a handful as the Bull’s defense could not slow them down.

Bulls Have the Second-Toughest Schedule in the League

NBA commentators have argued that the Bulls have the second-toughest schedule in the League. This means that finishing out of the regular season for them would not be a walk in the park. There are 23 games between the Bulls and their first postseason since the 2016/17 season.

The Milwaukee Bucks are the only team that has tougher fixtures than the Bulls. For example, 12 out of their 23 games will be against teams currently ranked in the top six of their respective conference. Additionally, nine of these tough matchups will be against Eastern Conference teams, such as three against fifth-placed Milwaukee Bucks and two against Miami Heat, who are tied in the first place. Additionally, they have two matches against the fourth-placed Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Bulls will also face sixth-placed Boston Celtics and third-placed Philadelphia 76’ers one time each. The Bulls have a combined 2-8 against these five teams. When you expand the list to include matchups in the West such as Suns, Grizzlies, and Jazz, the Bulls only have a 3-10 record.

Injury Woes

Considering their injury woes, the Bulls will have to be at the top of their game when the second part of the season begins after the All-Star break. Luckily, they have the momentum after a five-game winning run before the break. Moreover, DeMar DeRozan has continued to play at MVP-level throughout the season. On the other hand, Nikola Vucevic has also rediscovered his All-Star form.

Vucevic has been an integral part of his team’s midseason success. He has averaged 24.1 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in each game in the last ten games. The Bulls will be hoping he can put in similar performances in the coming games.

Finally

If the Bulls want to be the best, they must triumph over the best. Fortunately, the Bulls have a golden chance to achieve that in the coming days. However, they will need a fully-fit squad to achieve these aspirations.

Church building damaged in extra-alarm blaze in Albany Park, third fire in the neighborhood this week

Firefighters battled an extra-alarm blaze at a church Wednesday afternoon in Albany Park — the third fire within blocks of each other this week.

The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. at House on the Rock Church in the 4500 block of North Spaulding Avenue, Chicago fire officials said.

Crews elevated the fire to a 2-11 alarm but it was extinguished by 2:15 p.m., officials said. No injuries were reported, though teams continued to search the site.

The church was heavily damaged by the fire, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. He said the building had been “unused for some time.”

Two other fires have occurred blocks away within the last week. On Monday, popular brewery Twisted Hippo was destroyed and an apartment building was gutted in a massive fire in the 4300 block of North Richmond.

Another fire broke out Tuesday in the 3300 block of West Cullom Avenue, injuring a firefighter.

Langford said it was too early to say if the fires were connected. Unsafe conditions at the fire on Richmond have kept investigators from examining the site, Langford said Tuesday.

Blackhawks work on 6-on-5, 5-on-6 scenarios in practice after Sunday debacle

The Blackhawks have struggled in almost every possible on-ice situation this season, but at least they’ve spent equivalent practice time trying to work on most of those situations.

The same cannot be said for six-on-five and five-on-six situations when they or their opponent have pulled the goalie. The Hawks have been one of the NHL’s worst teams this season in those scenarios, too, yet barely touched on them in practice.

That changed this week. In response to Sunday’s particularly awful extra-attacker performance against the Panthers, they spent a while practicing it Tuesday and touched on it again Wednesday.

“It was obviously frustrating for some guys last game with those two six-on-fives,” Brandon Hagel said. “Because we did play a decent game and had ourselves in it all night, then we pulled our goalie and — five seconds later — it’s in the back of our net. That’s a killer. So it was good to work on that.”

In 35 minutes of six-on-five time this season, the Hawks rank a mediocre 17th in scoring chances per minute (1.06) and 18th in shots on goal per minute (1.09) but a horrendous 31st in expected goals per minute (0.08).

They’ve scored six extra-attacker goals, but three have been during delayed penalties. Their only such goals in late-game scenarios happened Oct. 15 against the Devils, a two-goal rally that ended with an overtime loss, and Jan. 28 against the Avalanche, in which two empty-net goals allowed still doomed them to a regulation loss. They’ve allowed 13 empty-net goals in total.

Meanwhile, in 22 minutes of five-on-six time, the Hawks have allowed the most shots on goal (1.91), second-most scoring chances (1.59) and fifth-most expected goals against (0.16) per minute.

They’ve surrendered late game-tying goals to teams with an extra attacker three times — Dec. 5 against the Islanders, Dec. 15 against the Capitals and Jan. 22 against the Wild — and allowed another extra-attacker goal Nov. 17 against the Kraken that ultimately didn’t matter. They’ve only scored five empty-net goals themselves.

Those woes came to a head Sunday. The Hawks pulled Fleury when Sam Lafferty dumped the puck far-corner with 1:57 left, but Hagel lost the puck battle all alone — Caleb Jones could’ve pinched in to help, but didn’t — and the Panthers quickly passed through the Hawks for a breakaway empty-netter with 1:48 left.

The Hawks pulled Fleury again when Patrick Kane dumped the puck in with 1:19 left. But Dylan Strome lost the initial puck battle by himself, Alex DeBrincat didn’t forecheck hard enough and the Panthers found space for a half-rink empty-netter with 1:09 left.

“We got the goalie out at the right time and we had the puck,” interim coach Derek King said. “You’re going to have to dump a puck in a lot of times, but it’s [about] what you do after that. We were just looking at each other like, ‘Who’s going to get it?’ Instead of just, ‘Everybody go get it.'”

The Hawks want to have a more specialized, specific plan for those empty-net scenarios moving forward, knowing they have to act differently — and more aggressively — in those situations than in others.

Their 30 remaining games this season might not matter much in the long run, but they can’t stop trying to improve on their weaknesses.

“It’s more just getting it in their mind that we’ve got to get a quick up and then we’ve got to go [on the forecheck],” King said. “You can’t just sit back. We did that and they pumped two on us.”

“When you’re coming into the zone, you have to keep possession of the puck,” Strome added. “[And] if you have to dump it in, you have to work extra hard to get it back. Guys are pretty skilled, so it’s easy for them to fire it down to an empty net.”

Blackhawks’ Jujhar Khaira likely out for season after back surgery

Jujhar Khaira’s interruption-laden season has likely met a premature end.

Khaira underwent lower-back surgery Tuesday at Northwestern Hospital, the Blackhawks announced Wednesday.

He’s expected to be “out of hockey activities” for 10-12 weeks. With just over nine weeks left in the 2021-22 NHL regular season, this likely concludes his first year with the Hawks.

It certainly hasn’t been the season the 27-year-old forward imagined when he signed a two-year contract with the Hawks in free agency last summer.

He suffered a concussion during a scary collision with Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba on Dec. 7 that sidelined him for nearly a month, then played just nine more games before his back injury sprang up Jan. 18. He underwent testing the past few weeks before ultimately deciding on this course of action.

“You’re just trying to fight it off, [hoping] there’s something where [the diagnosis is], ‘He’s going to be ok, he’ll be back in a week,'” interim coach Derek King said Wednesday. “But as you prolong it, he gets a second and third opinion to make sure, and then this is what they came up with. It’s too bad.”

Khaira will presumably finish the season with three goals and zero assists in 27 games, averaging 13:36 of ice time. He did dish out 88 hits (averaging 3.3 per game), providing an even more physical presence that he did earlier in his career in Edmonton.

“It’s obviously not the year he wanted,” King added. “We’re a much better team with him in the lineup, the way he plays. But sometimes these things happen and you’ve got to deal with them. He’ll deal with it the right way, and we’ll get him ready for next year.”

Other updates

The Hawks currently plan to start Marc-Andre Fleury in goal Friday against the Devils before Kevin Lankinen makes his return Sunday against the Blues.

Jake McCabe (back soreness) is likely to play Friday despite missing both practices so far this week. Tyler Johnson, despite practicing for weeks while recovering from his disc-replacement surgery, is less likely to return this weekend.

Julio Cruz, second baseman on White Sox’ 1983 division champion, dies at 67

Julio Cruz, the second baseman who crossed home plate with the run that clinched the White Sox’ 1983 AL West Division championship, died Tuesday. He was 67.

Cruz, who played 10 years with the Mariners and Sox from 1977-86 before enjoying a lengthy career as a Spanish-language broadcaster in Seattle, “passed away peacefully” while surrounded by family at home, according to a statement from his family.

Acquired by general manager Roland Hemond for Tony Bernazard in a June trade with the Mariners, Cruz helped spark the Sox to their first postseason appearance since 1959. A lifetime .237 hitter who stole 343 bases in a 10-year career, Cruz batted .251 with 24 stolen bases, 40 RBI and 46 runs scored in 99 games for the Sox in 1983. Cruz gleefully scoring a run on Harold Baines’ sacrifice fly for a walk-off victory over the Mariners before 45,646 fans on Sept. 17 set off a wild celebration at Comiskey Park, a snapshot of that season.

Cruz went 4-for-12 with two stolen bases in the Sox’ ALCS loss to the Orioles that season.

“The ‘Cruzer’ was the catalyst of that 1983 Western Division championship team,” Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. “When Roland Hemond acquired him that summer, the team just took off. Julio became our igniter, and his positive energy was contagious in the clubhouse, in the dugout and on the field.

“The White Sox organization sends its heartfelt condolences to Julio’s family and many friends.”

Cruz is being remembered by teammates for his caring personality.

“For fans, Julio was such an important part of the White Sox and in particular the 1983 team,” said Tony La Russa, his manager with the Sox. “We traded for him to ignite the offense, which he did.”

Cruz was also nickmaned “Juice.”

“He had electric ability as a player but was such a big part of those teams because of his personality,” La Russa said. “He was a caring guy and because of that had an emotional connection with his teammates on and off the field. This is a very sad day. He was much too young to leave us, and he will be missed.”

Said former teammate Greg Walker: “It is always shocking at our age to learn someone you hadn’t seen in a while has passed away. We were brothers together, teammates. He came into our clubhouse in 1983 and changed our team by bringing so much energy to the ballpark each and every day. Julio had a big heart and a bunch of energy that rubbed off on everyone. People don’t understand how close we came to winning it all in 1983, and Julio was a huge piece of that success.”

Cruz was involved in community causes including cancer awareness, Toys for Kids and youth baseball, the Mariners said. He is survived by his wife, Mojgan, and sons Austin, Alexander and Jourdan.
