The Chicago Bears have entered the third week of their search for a new general manager and head coach. It would appear that the Bears are making progress in regards to filling their head coaching vacancy.
Entering the week, it was already known that Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will interview for a second time and the list of second-round interviews for the Bears’ head coaching opening has grown.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported on Monday that the Bears will be interviewing Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell for a second time
It has previously been reported that Caldwell is a strong candidate to be the next head coach of the Bears so the news of a second interview is not that surprising, Quinn receiving a second interview with the Bears is a bit of a surprise as he was not previously considered a strong candidate for the vacancy.
The inclusion of Quinn in the second round of interviews could lend credence to the idea that Kansas City Chiefs’ executive Ryan Poles has a strong chance of being the team’s next general manager.
Poles interviewed with the Bears on Friday for the Bears’ general manager vacancy and are scheduled to interview for a second time this week. That may suggest that Quinn would be among the candidates that Poles would consider as his head coach.
Finalists have emerged for the current Chicago Bears head coaching vacancy.
Quinn would also represent a full-circle moment for the Bears. After the Bears fired head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery after the 2014 season and brought in general manager Ryan Pace, the belief was that Pace had identified Quinn to be the next head coach.
Unfortunately, Quinn was the defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks and the Seahawks were in the middle of a super bowl run. As opposed to waiting until the Seahawks’ run was over and officially hiring Quinn, Pace, through the strong endorsement from consultant Ernie Accorsi, opted to hire John Fox as the team’s head coach.
Seven seasons later the Bears could look to hire Quinn as the replacement to Fox’s replacement. Now that the Bears have a confirmed list of second-round interviews for their head coaching vacancy, it is fair to ask the question if the team knows what they are doing.
The answer to that question was confirmed when the team had to hire Bill Polian as a consultant to oversee the search for a new general manager and head coaching. The fact that Polian is overseeing both searches is what has created this mess.
