The ChicagoBlackhawks, as mentioned before, have plenty of options via free agency if they want to go that route to improve their team.
What if whoever replaces John McDonough as the President and CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks wants to put his stamp on the organization right away? They definitely might need to make some extra room as far as cap space but it can be done. They could end up losing Corey Crawford‘s entire cap hit, Robin Lehner might is not there to worry about coming back, and you never know what happens with Brent Seabrook or other expensive players.
There are plenty of free agents available. There are some pretty high-quality players available and there is some depth to the free-agent class. Some have already been discussed here but there are still some more players to go over. This year should have plenty of good players available to them. If they do end up firing Stan Bowman they could hire a guy who wants one of these guys.
They can go for some youth, leadership, forwards, or defense. It all depends on what they see as their biggest needs. The facts of the matter are that they need everything. They are very top-heavy at the forward and defense positions. They rely heavily on young players at every position and that might become even more apparent in 2020-21. This won’t be the last set of free agents that we look at before the free agency period begins, but this one that is set on defense.
The Blackhawks are really good at trading chances for chances with the opposition, but they need to start being better in their own end otherwise the recent results will continue. They also have some serious youth on the blue line that needs some leadership. It is very important that guys like Adam Boqvist and Ian Mitchell develop well next season.
