As the New Year approaches, that means something major for the NBA season and teams like the Chicago Bulls: trade season is nearing.
There have been plenty of NBA trade rumors lately, and some even involving the Bulls, which makes sense considering how their season has gone thus far.
The Bulls teased us recently with a 3-game winning streak just after some Zach LaVine drama surfaced. That short winning streak was great until the Bulls lost to the Houston Rockets to snap the fun.
Now, we get back to the drama and rumors, just as we would with any losing team. The Bulls very well could blow it up soon enough, and that might even include a DeMar DeRozan trade.
According to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, DeRozan could ask for a trade in the summer of 2023.
Haynes writes:
“If matters don’t improve this season, rival executives believe it could lead star guard DeMar DeRozan to request to be moved in the offseason, league sources tell Bleacher Report.”
How many rebuilds is this team going to endure? It seems like fans are put through this headache every few years, now. It’s a never-ending, vicious cycle.
We thought the madness would be over, finally, after Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley came aboard. At first, they said and did all the right things — and fans likely still believe they’re right for the organization.
It’s not that Karnisovas and Eversley didn’t do enough to get this team to a competitive state. The problem is, to put it simply, that the moves didn’t pan out.
The Lonzo Ball situation is gut-wrenching and confusing, but the Bulls are stuck with it. Ball’s health may never be 100 percent again, and it’s clear he was the catalyst for this team’s success.
The Nikola Vucevic deal looked great at first, but his performance has only went downward since joining Chicago.
Now, the LaVine contract is looking like a gigantic mistake. But, what else was Karnisovas to do? The team looked strong last year, when healthy, so he had to try and keep them together. That’s what he did.
But now? The roster looks like a disaster. So, who’s to blame DeRozan if he wants out? It makes sense. He wants to win. He’s at a point in his career where he’s at the top of his game, but age is not going to be kind to him.
If the Bulls can find a way to rid themselves of LaVine’s contract, knowing Vucevic is a free agent after the season, they might as well completely blow it up and try to get a haul for DeRozan.
