I’ve fallen behind on my beer reviewing. I’ve stashed lots of locals and beers sent to me, but have been slowed by extra work at my “real” job. Once I get this one going, I can do another. Sounds good to me.
Oskar Blues of Longmont, CO, has sent me its “CANspiracy Mix Pack,” what it says is its first mixed beverage package to include its beers and its hard seltzers under the Wild Basin label.
Oskar Blues Con-O-Bliss Tiki IPA
Starting off with an IPA with exotic hops, one the many trends these days. The varietals: Bru-1, HBC 586 and Sabro hops, were selected, they said to give the beer a tropical “Tiki” flavor.
And yes, soon as I pop the top, I get a big juicy exotic fruit punch in the nose, that stays with me through the pour. It has a hazy enough yellow body that I can’t see my fingers on the other side of the glass. A thick, slightly yellow head.
The taste is sharply bitter, but not with the usual hop pine or resin. Instead there’s plenty of pineapple and citrus, maybe bitter orange. They say it has a coconut aspect, and I did pick some of that up in the nose, but not the taste. It’s a nice surprise, having some different tastes, but nothing far out of the IPA profile.
Check in later as I taste more of these beers, and eventually get to the seltzer. Hey, there’s a “Habanero Piña Colada,” so I’m up to get to that.
