I feel like I’m watching moving pictures of the Middle Ages and Medieval Times including coronations, laws, kings, queens, taxes, and wars. Maybe it’s the vast array of synthesizers that really evoke the mood? Whatever it is, I’m wishing I saw Deerhunter tour on this 4AD release from 2019.
Artist/Album: Deerhunter– Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?
Reason For Purchase: Found in the cutout bins at Laurie’s Planet Of Sound. I was aware of Halcyon Digest and curious about the rest of their catalog.
[embedded content]Songs To Hear: “Elemental,” is the song that sticks out at first. You have that feeling that you’ve heard it. The harpsichord, played by Cate Le Bon, on “Death In Midsummer” gives one the feeling that you’re watching a band of courtiers entertaining the Monarchy. Maybe Bradford Cox and the band are playing a grand celebration?
[embedded content]“Futurism” reminds me of the pop that I grew up with, from the sunny ’60s to the psychedelic ’70s, to the new wave ’80s, it’s just incredible, but “Plains” might be my favorite? I just love the drums and upbeat rhythms. The first time through I felt as though I hadn’t heard anything like it.
Why You Want It?: The songwriting is some of their best, and this is the closest they’ve come to accessible pop. It plays quickly and brings the listener back for more.
[embedded content]Collection Worthy?: Most definitely, as this might be their best album to date. After five full listens, this is something I have to have in my collection. There are instrumentals, spoken word sonnets, and several pop gems to keep you interested.
