Me: “Happy Dependence Day!”
You: “Wait, what? I thought it was ‘Independence’?”
Me: “Well, yes, when you’re talking about the holiday commemorating the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, it is. But, what I’m talking about here is our dependence on each other. After all, humans are social creatures. We need each other, no matter how much some of us may act like we don’t. We crave connection and belonging. A hand on the shoulder, an understanding look in the eye. Compassion for our pain. Courage for our fear. Hope for our despair. Joy for our sorrow. Kindness to ease the sting of life’s too-often jabs. And that’s true both in the real and virtual worlds. We’re all dependent on the ‘kindness of strangers and friends alike’ to help us get to where we want to go and become who we want to be. So, again, I say ‘Happy Dependence Day!’”
You: “Cool! Will there be fireworks?”
Me: “Well, unfortunately, my Dependence Day budget is limited. How do you feel about sparklers?”
