President Joe Biden, as usual, today was notably unimpressive, ill-prepared and far off-track when he blessed America with his latest “plan” to fight Covid.
A half billion test kits for Americans is about the only significant, new element of his so-called plan–a step that was too late. (What he failed to discuss is what 100 million Americans should do when they test positive for Omicron, the new Covid-19 variant? Flood doctors’ offices and hospitals in “concern” (not “panic”)).
Also too late was the good news that therapeutic drugs to treat infected patients are soon on their way. Merck and Pfizer have developed treatments that reportedly are 30-percent to 85-percent effective and nearing FDA approval.
Should have been done long ago. Should have been given as much urgency as the development of a vaccination. America should not have had to wait for those drugs when existing, safe, inexpensive and effective drugs are available now. Clinicians–the doctors and nurses on the front line of treatment–report that the use of existing drugs Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin are among those that work.
But standing in the way of their approved use has been Master of the Universe Anthony Fauci. For him, one of the problems is that these drugs are being used “off-label”–that the FDA approved these drugs for other diseases and conditions but not for Covid-19. Never mind that off-label uses of drugs is a wide-spread practice.
Fauci instead favors the development of therapeutics by Big Pharma. That means that whatever it comes up with will be vastly more expensive. And that it will not be immediately available because of the extensive testing that Fauci wants. (Even though the vaccinations were approved without such extensive testing.)
This is nothing new for Fauci. With the outbreak of AIDS, clinicians also were finding that existing and inexpensive off-label drugs were effectively to combat HIV–the virus that causes AIDS. Yet Fauci, in the same job, was able to block the approved use of those drugs. Like now, many people died as a result of Fauci’s stubbornness. And from his multiple conflicts of interest because of his close ties to Big Pharma.
Biden has demonstrated that he is unable to govern. That he has someone as stubborn, arrogant and conflicted as Fauci advising him is dangerous. Can Biden rise to the occasion and do what’s right?
