One year ago today. Three hundred sixty-five days.
Today is the first anniversary of the insurrection at the United States Capitol building. “Patriots” stormed the building to try to subvert the will of the American people. They unsuccessfully tried to overturn a presidential election. They unsuccessfully tried to overturn our democracy that began in 1776.
Only because of the actions of a handful of men and women did all of the above fail.
It isn’t mentioned enough but people died as a result of these actions last January 6th. Who is being held responsible for these deaths? As of today, no one. More than seven hundred people have been charged for their actions but nothing about the deaths. WHY NOT?!
We need consequences for those involved in the events of that day. Not only those who stormed the Capitol but those whose actions set the event in motion. Those who egged on the rioters to head over to the Capitol.
Yes, of course I know there’s a House of Representatives select committee investigation working on this. WORK FASTER! Yes, I saw the Merrick Garland speech promising that the Justice Department is working to make sure everyone involved will be prosecuted. WORK FASTER!
So on this insurrection anniversary, a good way to honor those affected by what happened a year ago would be with some indictments, the higher up the better. What could be a better way to get past that day. What could be a better way to move forward.
