Celebrating the Feast of Saint Francis Assisi (October 4) always brings to mind animals and nature for me. However, this saint went beyond that in his Franciscan Way. “It is in the giving of oneself that one receives,” is at the very core of everything this saint did.
It seems simplistic, but my experiences have led me to believe that the most powerful works of God can be brought out in those seemingly minuscule moments in the every day.
Conversations come to mind with total strangers. On a recent trip to New York, my daughter and I talked to people from all walks of life. Looking back on those conversations, I find myself smiling. Behind the masks, were eyes that were smiling with joy and gratitude. We were all so happy to be together and experience some normalcy.
As Fr. Agustino quotes the gang banger in his talk, “You Christians need to be who you say you are!” Father believes in the Franciscan Option:
the belief that the Radical Christ-Centered incarnationalism of St. Francis, renewed in those called to engage society, has the power to transform the world.
It is easy to be an instrument of God’s peace when everyone is smiling and joyful. It is more difficult when faced with someone contrary. Facing that challenge has been difficult for me as I pray St. Francis’ prayer.
There’s comfort and encouragement in St. Francis’ prayer. The difficulties also bring to mind the words of Mother Angelica, who understood human nature well:
The Lord wanted St. Francis to start where he was, so I will take a deep breath, and start where I am.

I was asked to write a post inspired by Fr. Agustino Torres’ Talk in the OSV Talks series, a series of topics from prominent Catholic leaders to spark discussion, explore new or re-explore old approaches, and inspire creative thinking, all from the heart of the Church.
Please join me and other Catholics (and some not-so-Catholics!) on my Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram.
I also write for Catholic365.com on occasion, and CatholicMom.com every 4th Thursday of the month so take a moment and check them out.
