Lovie Smith lands himself in a head coaching role once againVincent Pariseon February 7, 2022 at 8:09 pm

Whether people like it or not, Lovie Smith is the best head coach that the Chicago Bears have had in the 21st century. He was unfairly fired after a 10-6 season in 2012. The Bears failed to make the playoffs despite their 10 win season which is fair criticism but it isn’t like they got better with this move.

In fact, things have been significantly worse. Since Lovie walked out that door, the Bears have been graced by the presence of Marc Trestman, John Fox, and Matt Nagy. We hope that Matt Eberflus is a different story but only time will tell for that.

Under Lovie Smith, the 2006 Bears went 13-3 in the regular season. They rode that magic all the way to Super Bowl XLI where they were defeated by Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. It was a magnificent year that came up just short.

Since leaving the Bears for Lovie, he was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he did not have any success at all and that was followed by a stint as the head coach for the University of Illinois. He was then the Houston Texans associate head coach in 2021.

It is with great pleasure to say that he is going to be the next head football coach of those Texans that he has spent the last year with. He will be given an opportunity to coach in the NFL for the first time since 2015. He more than deserves this chance.

Texans are expected to hire former Buccaneers and Bears head coach Lovie Smith as their own head coach, sources tell me and @fieldyates.

Smith was the Texans’ associate head coach last season; all he now needs to do is drop the associate from his title.

Now, the Texans are a disaster. They have had no luck with anything over the last few years. They need to figure out what to do with Deshaun Watson and that needs to be first and for most. He is an elite talent that has some serious legal issues going on right now. Once that gets resolved, the team can start worrying about football again.

Lovie will be tasked with turning that place around. It isn’t going to be easy but he has the knowledge and pedigree to get it done. It might take a long time and we can only hope that he is given the time needed to do so.

It is awesome to see him get this shot because the Bears probably should have never fired him in the first place. If he succeeds with Houston, it is fair to be extremely happy for him. The Houston Texans have Lovie Smith and the Houston Astros have Dusty Baker. Yay for early 2000s Chicago coaches landing in modern-day Houston.
