Chicago Bears: Three reasons to trade Mitchell Trubiskyon March 28, 2020 at 3:00 pm
The Chicago Bears officially have a quarterback controversy but they might be able to avoid that from happening if they traded one of them away.
The Chicago Bears are in an interesting spot. Their GM is not the best according to a lot of fans but there are definitely some pros and cons. He has missed in the early rounds of almost every draft he has been a part of with the Bears. He has, however, been pretty great in the later rounds of those same drafts. He has also built one of the best defenses in the National Football League. He has also put together an offense that has been completely inept.
A large reason for the offense being so bad is absolutely the play at the quarterback position. Yes, they need some players on their offensive line and another receiver. They also only really added Jimmy Graham as a tight end which is a major position of need for their offense. He really only has one chance left to get this offense going so he can take advantage of that great defense that he has put together.
Now, there will be a decision to be made as far as who the team’s starting quarterback will be on Opening Day of the NFL season. They traded for Nick Foles from the Jacksonville Jaguars last week so that makes people wonder if it will be him or Mitchell Trubisky under center in 2020. If the Bears were to trade Mitchell Trubisky now then they wouldn’t have that dilemma on their hands. These are the three reasons that they should trade Trubisky to another team right now:

Health Care Mythologies
The Post From The End of The World
Here’s something I was pretty sure I’d not be doing again.
Blogging.
But desperate times call for desperate measures.
At the request of some of my loyal readers, I am here to bring calm and hope in this time of terror, confident that it will be read, because you have literally nothing better to do.
So, what shall I write about?
COVID-19: origins, spread, safety tips?
NO!! My God, have you not gotten enough of this shit from every single media outlet available?
Instead, today I will talk about how to survive being sequestered with your family without getting cabin fever, leading to you becoming like Jack Nicholson in “The Shining”.
(If you have not seen it, do so. You are literally the only one who hasn’t.)
Now, what authorizes me to speak on this topic?
Well, I am sequestered with my wife, daughter and 3 and 5 year old granddaughters.
Possibly for months.
I am seriously debating volunteering to help out the medical teams in the hope of getting sequestered. Maybe in a cave somewhere.
NO, JUST KIDDING!! I couldn’t be happier.
Besides, I’m a radiation oncologist. You’d be better off with a boy scout with a first aid merit badge.
OK, so let’s address the issues that currently plague us (Ha Ha!):
DISEASE:
Now, this may come as a shock to many of you, but mankind has faced many plagues over the ages. The most famous one is the infamous “Black Plague” in 1348-1351.
About one fourth of the European population died. Yet, in the end the continent (and humankind) survived.
Corona virus is bad, but it’s just not that bad (yet, as far as we know), however, it is the novelty of this disease and speed of spread that is giving everyone fits.
In the end, this will burn itself out.
More importantly, the hope is that humankind will learn something about the nature of our world, where we can no longer think of any disease outbreak as “localized”.
For better or worse, we are a global community. One member gets sick, we all can get sick.
We can never again assume that we are “immune” to the world’s “ills”. (Wow, two puns in a row!)
So what are we dealing with as a result of this disease?
Isolation
Beyond any shadow of a doubt, this “shelter at home” is something we have never had to deal with before.
Never have we had to literally shut down our society to this degree.
Never have we been so confined to quarters. (With the obvious exception of when you were sent to your room for saying, “Shut up!” to your mother. You know who you are.)
What we have ironically learned is that with all of our media devices that incessantly “keep us connected”, we really are not connected without the presence of other people.
Even work, which we bitch about night and day, is suddenly missed.
The fact is, we need each other.
To Much “Together Time”
The diametric opposite of isolation is forced captivity. While we all love our family (and in all seriousness, I do) we suddenly realize how much we miss our “Me” time.
The disruption of our little daily routines (store, gym, etc.) is more disturbing than most of us would have thought, especially when it goes on and on, seemingly without end.
Many of us are like rats in an overcrowded cage, ready to kill one another for a little more breathing room.
(My family is really going to love this.)
Let’s hope that when we are able to resume our activities, we learn to appreciate how much we really took for granted.
Information Overload
We have too much access to too much information. Worse yet, both accurate, valuable information and total bullshit are treated equally today.
And most of us don’t know the difference. Worse, some of us don’t want to know.
What this causes is a constant sense of dread and worry. At the very least, a vague sense of unease.
If you sneeze, you have corona virus. Someone coughs, they have corona virus. Everyday things become death knells.
We worry about family and friends we cannot be with, because the news tells us they could all be dead soon.
This is a time where limiting yourself to one VALID source of information should be enough.
I recommend the CDC website as one of the best.
Hoarding
Given that we live in one of the richest nations on earth, the strange need to hoard everyday products like toilet paper baffles me, especially for a disease that doesn’t cause any GI issues.
I am willing to bet that the vast majority of us already possessed more than we needed, at least for several weeks at a time.
However, this is a great example of “mob” mentality, where suddenly some commodity becomes more valuable than gold.
Who would have ever thought that if they were asked, “What would be the first thing you would stockpile at the end of the world?”, the answer would be, “toilet paper”.
Really? Do you plan to eat it? Weave it into clothes? What the hell is wrong with people?
I’ll tell you what’s wrong.
People are idiots. And people in mobs are even bigger idiots.
What we should all learn is to use your brain, don’t succumb to artificially created panic.
Which brings me to my last topic:
Resolution
As I said at the very beginning, this too will pass. Economies will recover, people will go back to work and back to their daily routines.
We will once again be free to go out to eat and socialize as we desire.
Let us not forget this time, however.
Keep in mind what we missed:
Each other. (But, not too much of each other.)
Let us appreciate what we have. (And not try to get as much of it as we can.)
Kindness and patience. (Which is often sorely lacking.)
And finally, in the face of all the misinformation out there-Stay Skeptical!
I will try to update this post, now that I truly have the time.
Please like and share and stay safe.

The Killers Join Jimmy Kimmel To Talk New Album, Sinatra, & The Coronavirus
The Killers joined Jimmy Kimmel to talk about their new album, Imploding The Mirage, Frank Sinatra dying and the Coronavirus. It made for an interesting conversation, and I really wanted to share it.
They also played their new single, “Caution,”…in a bathroom, and it sounded unbelivable. #ShelterInPlace

Acoustic Music in Chicago
Got Computer? Then you Have Music
Obviously, all live attendable concerts have been cancelled for the foreseeable future. This is an inconvenience to us groupies, but it is their life and livelihood for the performers. That’s a long-sight from just an inconvenience.
Many are filling in the void with online concerts, and Patreon pages. If you have Facebook, or one of the many other social media sites, you have access to most of the online concerts and events. Unfortunately, these usually are not announced far enough in advance to be included in these Saturday morning articles. Follow your favorite performers there, or on their web pages, and you’ll be in the loop.
But, for now, we have:
Tuesday, March 31.
Songs for National Tater Day on Folk Festival with Lilli Kuzma. 90.9 FM, or www.wdcb.org. 8 PM. All attendable events for the near future have been cancelled or postponed.
Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues Band will be live online at www.facebook.com/corkysiegel. 2:20 PM.
Friday, April 3.
Happy birthday, little Jack.
Grace Pettis and Rachel Reese live on www.facebook.com/gracepettismusic. 7:30 PM.
That’s all we have. I’m sure you can find more just by checking online on a regular basis. In the mean time, stay home, do all those things we are told to do, and hopefully we can all be out and about come Summer (this Summer).
And share this article on Facebook. After all, you’re home with nothing to do (how many times can you alphabetize your spice bottles?).

Quiet your mind with me today!on March 28, 2020 at 5:30 pm
Looking for the Good
Quiet your mind with me today!
I have been practicing meditation for many years. I started out just trying different ways until I found what works best for me. I often do it quietly before bed, yet other times I do a walking meditation or use a prerecorded one. If thoughts enter in, I don’t resist it. I just gently move away from it. If it becomes a persistent thought, I will take a moment to write it down so that I can focus. In my meditation practice, I only do it for 10 minutes at a time, and I even set my alarm so I am not tempted to check the clock. I like to sit in silence with my eyes closed. It is my time to take a break from negativity. Just like my suggestion of focusing on three positive things each day in this post Where can you find the good today, this is another concrete step or action I can take during these challenging days.
Here are four examples; however, there are many more. The important part is to just clear your mind, sort of like giving it a break from thoughts.
- Sit quietly with your eyes closed
- Stare at something like a candle or a body of water
- Meditation recording
- Walking meditation
Just remember that even if it feels scary right now, you can take care of your mental health by giving your mind a short break from that negativity by practicing meditation. Quiet your mind with me today!

Dear Brides-to-Be,
I know it seems frivolous to think about a wedding during a global pandemic. People are dying, losing their jobs and everyone is fearful of the unknown.
Unless it’s your wedding.
Then it takes over your entire mindset. All day. Every day.
Even during the best of circumstances, you would be absorbed with your wedding plans day and night. That’s what brides do.
Perhaps you are a first responder, doctor or nurse at the front lines of the battlefield. Or a laid off hotel employee, chef or small business owner.
Or just a woman working really hard to try and make sense of all this.
Why me? Why now?
Too much stress to fathom.
Your wedding is in pieces.
I feel sorry for you right now. Deeply sorry.
You may have planned an April wedding for the last two years? Or a May wedding in the last six months?
Doesn’t matter.
It’s your wedding day.
Five hundred guests attending or fifty?
Doesn’t matter.
A destination wedding at a luxury resort in Mexico? An intimate gathering at a restaurant? A huge church wedding and dinner reception with a live band?
Doesn’t matter.
Postpone? Until when? No one knows when this will be behind us. Or when people will feel comfortable gathering in a large group. Or when that is even possible.
So many decisions and details to attend to and nothing seems to be going according to the best laid plans.
There is no such thing as best laid plans right now.
Vendors, caterers, florists and photographers should be flexible in rearranging a wedding down the road. They have much to lose during this crisis, even more than you.
I know that is disappointing to you.
Missed bridal showers, bachelorette parties and boxes of printed invitations still not mailed.
You are hurting. Tears are being shed.
I know you don’t want to hear this right now but please know you will get through this.
This will test your mettle. Your grace under fire. Your strength. Your sense of humor.
Especially your sense of humor.
Adversity does not
build character,
it reveals it.
James Lane Allen
Marriage is a lifelong commitment.
You and your partner will face a multitude of difficulties in your marriage. No one gets out of life unscathed. Trust me.
Marriage isn’t defined by a “first look,” the best man’s toast or a tender dance with your father.
Marriage is defined by how you and your partner face life’s challenges and celebrate life’s greatest joys with all the bland, boring stuff in between.
You have each other and that is all that truly matters.
You got this.
Whatever transpires with your wedding plans, I promise your wedding will happen. Maybe not the day you chose, but that’s only a date on a calendar.
And when that wedding day arrives, I think your family and friends will surround you with even greater love and support because you were a warrior.
You made the best of a very difficult time in our history.
You survived.
You are undaunted.
You have grit.
Button up that beautiful gown, smell that fragrant bouquet of flowers, say your vows with conviction and radiate happiness with you chin held high.
Meanwhile, stay healthy. Stay calm. Keep your cool.
And may you live happily ever after.
I salute you.

Are You Waiting For Our YouTube Debut? I Am!
You’ve seen them on YouTube and Facebook by the hundreds. Average people, people like you and me, confined with their partners or all alone in houses and apartments across the country, diving deep into their inner souls and belting out tunes. Show tunes, pop songs, operas, inspiring gospel, and, parody songs that bring some lightness into our current grayness.
Wait–parody songs? I can write those. I’ve written lots of parody songs. Homebuilding, politics, Tony Awards…I’ve written parody songs about them and included them in my blogs since the very beginning back in 2015. That is to say, I have included my lyrics in my blogs. Never have I tried to actually perform and record one of those ditties. I wanted to spare my readers from that.
But times are different now, free time is abundant, and after watching a couple sing their homage to Simon and Garfunkle’s “Homeward Bound” I decided to cross the Rubicon, to take the plunge, to say WTF. I was going to write a parody, coerce Barb into performing it with me and post it on-line. (Those of you who witnessed our parody of “I Got You, Babe” before a live audience last year are already quivering, though I can’t tell if it is with anticipation or terror.) To my utter amazement, I was able to convince Barb to give it a try.
First to pick a song to parody. My (unintentional) target demographic is boomers, so I looked for a tune that would immediately resonate with our “2nd Greatest Generation” in our most trying time. A tune that could be performed by a couple in our earlyish AARP years, and which could call for some simple piano. It didn’t take me long to choose. Barb and I would become Archie and Edith Bunker, belting out a rousing rendition of “Those Were the Days,” Coronavirus edition.
I composed my lyrics in half-an-hour, then downloaded the sheet music and replaced the printed libretto with my own. Barb sat at our piano — a more upscale model than the Bunkers’s had in their Queen’s apartment, but that was part of the fun. She worked hard, very hard, at nailing the music. We fine-tuned the lyrics to match the melody and meter. We discussed where to get props: a frilly apron for Barb, a cigar for me. I learned how to work the remote control on my AppleWatch to turn on the iPhone video camera. We rehearsed, rehearsed, rehearsed.
After half a day of preparation, we were ready to go. I scouted out camera locations, finally deciding on fastening the phone to the strut of the piano lid. Oodles of blue tape went into holding the phone in place at just the right height and at just the right angle.
Lights, camera, action!
We tried. Oh Lord, we tried. On some takes, I hit the photo button instead of the video button. On some takes, the camera angle was wrong. On some takes, the grandfather clocked chimed. And above all, every take had one thing in common. We stunk! We were flat, we were pitchy, we blew the lyrics. I came in a beat too early, Barb a beat too late. And as for harmony — man, you have got to be kidding!
I sadly announce: we gave up. All videos were sent to the trash, not to YouTube. We will never be social media stars. But for any of you who have the itch, my lyrics to “Pre-Covid Days” follow. Feel free to upload your version. Just give us credit for the lyrics, Charles Strouse credit for the music, and send us a link!
Pre-Covid Days
Last year things were going fine
We were living on cloud nine
Eating steak and drinking wine
Pre-Covid days
**
Went to movies on date night
Great restaurants to grab a bite
Planes were packed for every flight
Pre-Covid days
**
We could walk along the shore
We could open every door
Now we’re staying home
Can’t go to Neiman-Marcus no more
**
The world is gonna whip this bug
But now’s a time to just unplug
Give your kids a virtual hug
It’s Covid days

Hi! I am Les, a practicing pathologist living in the North Suburbs and commuting every day to the Western ones. I have lived my entire life in the Chicago area, and have a pretty good feel for the place, its attractions, culture, restaurants and teams. My wife and I are empty-nesters with two adult children and a grandchild. We recently decided to downsize, but just a bit! I will be telling the story of the construction of our new home, but also writing about whatever gets me going on a particular day. Welcome to 3rd World America in the time of coronaviruson March 28, 2020 at 6:09 pm
Bon Bini Ya’ll
Welcome to 3rd World America in the time of coronavirus
Having for years said that the USA had devolved into a third world, banana republic, tragically in these chaotic days of coronavirus this is proving all too true.
- A young father in Brooklyn needed an adult thermometer, but couldn’t buy one for love or money either online or on the streets of New York City. Decrying this 3rd world shortage in a tweet that his 70-year old parents read, they wrapped up their one electronic thermometer and for the first time in two weeks, went to the post office to send it to him. After all, they still had two mercury thermometers. One in Celsius from years living abroad in the 3rd world where shortages of simple things was common.
- A hospital RN in Western Massachusetts on health leave due to pre-existing condition, got an email from a staffing agency. “Good afternoon, this is Lorna w/trustaff. Any chance you’re available to help with COVID19 needs in NY? We just got new needs there, $4896/gross (est.$4200 net) for 48 hour guarantees. They also have 36 hour guarantees for $3800 gross est. $3400 net. We offer referral bonuses if you know of anyone available, they are desperate for help. If interested, please fill out an application.”
- As has been reported by multiple sources and the informative daily briefings by Governor Cuomo of New York State, without serious Federal leadership to organize life-saving ventilators, PPEs, face shields, gloves and masks for hospitals and first responders, America’s 50 states have been forced to bid not only against each other, but also against the muscle of the Federal Government. This Balkanization of our union more resembles a demented version of the Hunger Games than of the saying “united we stand, divided we fall.”
- And then there is Rhode Island. As reported by NBC News, “Rhode Island police, troops stopping incoming New Yorkers to enforce quarantine“. When the family of American citizens views other citizenry as the other, who will stop the madness?
Civilization is a thin veneer that humans create, as fragile as a butterfly’s wing it can easily and quickly devolve into something no sane person wants. Don’t let it be crushed under the vacuum of a leaderless ship of state. We are all part of the family of humans, remember that and live the ethics we claim to espouse.
Please.

I was an accidental expatriate; love and marriage led me to it. One day I was a bandy-legged kid sitting atop my dogwood tree looking out of my small backyard world in 1950s New Jersey, wanting to move somewhere–anywhere, different. Next thing I knew I met a young hirsute anti-war, soon-to-be-Peace Corps volunteer, fell in love and moved to Peru in the 1970s.
WHAT an adventure it’s been!!
