Chicago Bears News: Germain Ifedi signing not the answeron March 25, 2020 at 6:50 pm
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace chose to sign yet another former NFL Draft bust in Germain Ifedi to come in and compete on the offensive line.
There seems to be a little bit of a trend with some of Ryan Pace’s moves this offseason. The Chicago Bears recently brought in 2016 first-round pick Artie Burns to try and bolster their competition at cornerback. Wednesday, they inked another first rounder from the exact same draft class.
Burns was selected no. 25 overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and just six picks later the Seattle Seahawks chose offensive lineman Germain Ifedi out of Texas A&M.
Over his NFL career, Ifedi has started 60 games for the Seahawks. At first glance, one might think that’s quite impressive. But, when looking at how Russell Wilson has been running for his life for most of the last few seasons, your excitement level should drop significantly.
One of the main reasons Pace brought in Ifedi is due to his versatility. He has played both guard and tackle in Seattle, but will likely suit up at the former in Chicago.
Former #Seahawks OL Germain Ifedi is signing a 1-year deal with the #Bears, source said. The former first-rounder gets a fresh start and may play guard in Chicago.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 25, 2020
The Bears, of course, lost former starting guard Kyle Long to retirement this offseason and are in search for a replacement. While Ifedi might be a nice name, as a former first-round selection, he cannot be the answer.
This is a low-risk pickup, but the Bears have to address the offensive line in the upcoming NFL Draft. With two second-round selections, Chicago will have its share of some strong candidates along the line. Whether that’s Matt Hennessy out of Temple, Cesar Ruiz of Michigan, or even going after one of the better offensive tackles at that point, the Bears must bolster the offensive line in the second round.

Ifedi’s struggles, a lot of times, have come from mental mistakes. In his four seasons as a pro, he has been penalized 46 times — 29 of those being false starts
On the positive side, he’s remained relatively healthy and has indeed been a starter — that’s something. The Ifedi signing gives me similar thoughts to when the Bears signed former Arizona Cardinals starter Bobby Massie. Obviously, Massie improved greatly since signing with Chicago and has become a fairly decent starter up front — good enough to earn an extension, in fact.
The Bears didn’t exactly solidify their offensive line with bringing in Ifedi, but they added a body — and that’s a start. As I said, hopefully this isn’t the end and, in fact, is the beginning of bolstering depth in that area. Now, we continue to look on at other free agents and forward to the draft.

Vietnam veteran left behind by COVID-19 panic
Lou Ciesla, a Vietnam Air Force veteran, may need critical heart surgery, but, sorry, Lou, because coronavirus patients are expected to flood hospitals, even though they’re not there yet, your surgery has been knocked to the back of the line. It’s now defined as “elective.”
As Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has questioned whether the elderly should step aside for the sake of their grandchildren, Lou’s story has wider implications, Mike, Lou’s son and my son-in-law, tells his story:
By Michael Ciesla,
My father is 74 years old and needs quadruple bypass surgery. He had a heart attack March 6 and was diagnosed with severe heart disease within days.
We met with a heart surgeon last week and we were told that if these were normal times, my father would be having surgery within a week. Because of the Coronavirus, all elective surgeries are barred.
Believe it or not, bypass surgery is considered elective at this point.
When we asked what it would take for an emergency surgery, we were told my father would need to be in cardiac arrest for surgery to even be considered. The reality is, if he were in cardiac arrest, they would just let him pass because they do not want to use resources if they can avoid it.
Yesterday morning my father had to go back to the hospital because he is experiencing heart attack symptoms again.
I have been to the hospital with my father several times this month. Every time I have been there, the waiting rooms are virtually empty as are other rooms throughout the hospital. This morning, I was literally the only person in the ER waiting room. The ambulance bays were empty and there were not many patients in the ER rooms. Last week my wife took our daughter to a different hospital in the middle of a weekday for stitches and they were the only people in the ER.
I have two points that people should be aware of:
First, America is making Coronavirus a priority over truly desperate medical cases. Surgeries that can save people’s lives are barred because hospitals want to keep resources available for potential Coronavirus patients. The news media have consistently stated facts that most people who contract Coronavirus will heal or never show symptoms. The media do not mention how many people who do not have Coronavirus but have medical issues will die because they cannot receive the medical care they need. I am positive that number will be a large multiple of the number of people who die from Coronavirus.
Second, the media portray hospitals as overrun and overworked. That is nonsense, at least in the north and northwest suburbs. Every picture I see on television of crowded hospitals are from Italy or China. There are none from Illinois. As I said, the hospitals are virtually empty. Also, when my father first went to the hospital on March 6, he was given a coronavirus test as soon as he walked in. Others in the hospital were also given such tests as I watched from the hallways of the ER. The media kept saying there were no coronavirus tests in Illinois until last week. I cannot speak for other hospitals but there absolutely were plenty of tests available in early March, which is contrary to the reporting then and now.
I suspect that my father is not the only person at high risk. I am begging for the media to report on the realties of what is happening in our hospitals. The public needs to know that hospitals are making Coronavirus a priority over–and to the fatal detriment of–truly sick individuals.
Mike, a north suburban attorney, sent this plea to a Chicago television. Will they do a report?

How can a homeless shelter survive the CoronaVirus?on March 25, 2020 at 3:08 pm
I’ve Got The Hippy Shakes
How can a homeless shelter survive the CoronaVirus?
It was December 2014. About a week before Christmas. I was living in a homeless shelter in the Lincoln park area of Chicago. The flu was causing havoc among the residents. My goal for the holiday was not to become one of its victims.
One afternoon, a group of us were playing a dice game. It was a regular activity among my group of shelter friends. A way to kill time and boredom of shelter life. After an hour or so, my head started hurting. I said I needed to lay down for a bit. Two hours later, I awoke and was shivering. I needed two blankets to get warm.
I didn’t accomplish my Christmas goal. I had the flu.
Out of thirty-five shelter residents, ten or so of us became ill. Whenever someone recovered, someone else got sick. It was if we were a group of grammar school kids passing our ailments back and forth. That’s what happens when a large group of people live in close quarters. It’s hard, if not impossible, to prevent it.
It’s now five years later. Everyone has recovered from the flu epidemic. Everyone has moved on with their lives. The shelter is still in existence with a new group of residents.
It’s five years later. A new disease has rocked the world. Covid-19. The CoronaVirus. It’s a pandemic. If a shelter can’t stop the flu from ravaging it’s building, what chance does it have to handle this?
So many issues. So many problems? Where will everyone sleep? How do handle social distancing? How do you keep the building clean? What about the volunteers that are a vital part of contributing to the shelters success? How can you feed everyone? How do you keep everyone inside?
The sleep issue is tough. This shelter has two dorms with the people sleeping in bunk beds. It’s a little too close for comfort. The solution was to take the bunks down and spread them out on two floors. It’s not perfect, but nothing ever is. It’s the best they can do under trying circumstances.
As for keeping the place clean, the residents are assigned daily chores. I used to make jokes about how cleaning the door knobs was the sweetest gig in the place. It’s not so funny anymore. The person who handles that may have the most important job in the shelter. It suddenly became important! Go figure. There’s always been daily sweeping and mopping of the floors. I’m sure that continues and the cleaning is deeper than usual.
Volunteers were always important to the success of the shelter. They answered phones, taught classes and most importantly, provided daily meals. For the safety of everyone, volunteers have now been put on hold. The problem becomes how do you feed thirty-five people three times a day? Honestly, I don’t know how it gets done. I’ve seen where food has been left at the shelter door and restaurants in the area have given meals. The longer this continues, the bigger problem this will be.
Finally, what about social distancing and keeping everyone inside? I’m not sure there’s enough room in the building to keep everyone six feet apart. I have seen photos of the residents going on group walks with everyone doing their best to keep to themselves. Like everything else, they’re doing the best they can.
So far, so good. However, we’re in the early part of the pandemic. As we move further into this, the numbers will go higher and no one will be immune to the virus….shelters included. Hell, shelters especially.
I guess everyone in shelters will just have to do what we all are told to do to stay safe:
Wash your hands and practice social distancing.

My so called friends think it’s time to edit this section. After four years, they may be right, but don’t tell them that. I’ll deny it until they die!
I can’t believe I’ve been writing this blog for four years.
It started as a health/wellness thing and over the years has morphed to include so many things that I don’t know how to describe it anymore.
I really thought this was going to be the final year of the blog but then Donald Trump came along. It looks like we’re good for four more years..God help us all!
Oh yeah…the biographical stuff. I’m not 60 anymore. The rest you can read about in the blog. -

Cut Out Kid
Cellar Dweller: Epic Brewing 2017 “Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist”
Today DDB (dontdrinkbeer) was fanboying about the $50, 12 oz, bottle of Toppling Goliath’s BA Coconut Assassin, that resells to the tune of $450. Yep, you heard that right. Some people will pay for $500 for a 12 oz bottle of beer, huh? Mindblowing…
He described in great detail this “depressing masterpiece” and how it wrecked the game because it was that good but so overpriced. I understand both sides, but I’m not in the market for this type of beer, and even if I could afford it, I could NEVER get my hands on it.
Back to the beer I just drank, and the beauty of the Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist. The nose is a beautiful piece of work on this Epic beer, maybe the best part. Light coconut, java, and bourbon. The warmer it gets, the better each sip is. The whiskey comes out, clawing at your throat. But as long as you keep your nose in the glass that coconut keeps that smooth ride arriving.
Everything is barrel-aged in here, the coffee beans, the coconut, and two separate barrels, whiskey and bourbon, were part of the process. Somehow they figured out how to make it all work together. This wasn’t a happy accident.
Now I’m sure that the Assassin variant might be pretty nifty, but for the price point of the Baptist, I’m super impressed. You can get your hands on this for right around $20, and you’ll get 22 ounces for that amount. Now, keep in mind, this bottle was from 2017, and the waiting has helped this mature tremendously. It’s not as in your face as it was when it was first released, it’s more approachable. Everything tastes a bit lighter and the adjuncts have melded together quite nicely.
It’s not the best barrel-aged beer I’ve ever had, but it’s a great offering.
Throw on Better Call Saul, and sip this for an hour. You won’t be disappointed.

Becoming SuperMommy
Fury: Women’s Lived Experiences During the Trump Era
It’s a strange thing to have a book come out about how horribly you have been impacted by the Trump presidency, and not to be able to hold it in your hands because you’re trapped in a hospital in large part because of the incompetence of the Trump presidency. It took me an additional four days to get a copy from my house, where it was delivered, to the hospital room where I’ve been living with Mike for nearly two weeks.
The essay I have included in this book is adapted from an essay that first appeared on this blog. It’s about antisemitism, gun violence, and feminism. Two months ago, if you asked me, “What is the worst thing the Trump administration had done to you, personally?” I might have said, “Stephen Miller,” and gestured helplessly. I might have said, “Goddamn fucking disability cuts,” and then started shouting at nobody in particular until everyone present thought I was angry at them specifically. I might have said, “There are still children in cages, and they are still dying of preventable causes,” and I might have started to cry.
I cry a lot, recently.
Today I would tell you, “They knew this was coming, and they sold stocks instead of preparing.”
“They knew this was coming, and they lied so people would think Trump was doing a good job.”
“They know this is happening, but they care more about their stocks than the lives of literally anyone. Anyone.”
It’s a mark of how dreadful these last three and a half years have been that there is so much one could add to further editions of this book.
“Terror: Women’s Survival Experiences During the Trump Pandemic” is no doubt another collection on the horizon.
While you’re all cooped up and looking to feel a sense of community, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Through these stories of humanity, of other people going through the same struggles as you, there is reprieve from our isolation.
There is a link below, not only to the original paperback but to both hardbound copies and the e-book as well.
Stay strong, friends. Stay safe.
We will do what we always have, and that is to find the connections to each other we need to survive this.
