My apologies if these questions have been asked and answered. I just have not seen them asked and answered.
CTU says 73 percent approved staying out of the Chicago public schools. Okay, but how many members voted? Was the turnout high or low? What percentage of union membership actually voted? It would be an important measure of the degree of rank-and-file support of the leadership
How was the voting conducted? I’m assuming digitally, from a personal or home computer. Were those votes secret? If so, how did they do that? If the members can be identified, how many members didn’t vote against the plan but were afraid to because of expected or threatened peer pressure to support the leadership?
What does the contract say about withholding services? Can the teachers be denied their pay, like Mayor Lori Lightfoot has indicated? Can this action be called a strike and if so, is it legal.
What specifically has the CTU leadership demanded be done by way of adding more protections for teachers? Are such demands reasonable?
Following up on the above. The Biden administration has said that it has provided some $120 billion to upgrade schools, with new ventilation and other improvements to improve safety. Of that, Chicago gets (got) $1.8 billion. Has that money been received? Spent? How so? Or has it been diverted into other things, such as pensions?
While classrooms were open for in-person learning, how many students, teachers, administrators and staff became infected? How seriously? How many (percentage) by group were hospitalized? How many died? CTU argues that its members aren’t safe; can they demonstrate this, or are we just supposed to take their word for it?
If I think of more, I’ll add them.
