I have been practicing meditation for many years. I started out just trying different ways until I found what works best for me. I often do it quietly before bed, yet other times I do a walking meditation or use a prerecorded one. If thoughts enter in, I don’t resist it. I just gently move away from it. If it becomes a persistent thought, I will take a moment to write it down so that I can focus. In my meditation practice, I only do it for 10 minutes at a time, and I even set my alarm so I am not tempted to check the clock. I like to sit in silence with my eyes closed. It is my time to take a break from negativity. Just like my suggestion of focusing on three positive things each day in this post Where can you find the good today, this is another concrete step or action I can take during these challenging days.
- Sit quietly with your eyes closed
- Stare at something like a candle or a body of water
- Meditation recording
- Walking meditation
Just remember that even if it feels scary right now, you can take care of your mental health by giving your mind a short break from that negativity by practicing meditation. Quiet your mind with me today!
