We have been waiting patiently for Hippo’s third album, aptly titled LP3, and now it’s here, on our doorstep, for the playing. The first song that stands out after one listen is “Listerine,” a subtle love song where the subject suffers from martyrdom, confessing that you can’t scrub the sharp edges out of his personality.
You mess it up for me, we’ll be history/You’ve got lips and I’ve got Listerine, But you can’t wash the fucked up out of me tonight.”
Welcome back, Red Hots! I never saw this pleasant surprise coming, though I’ve been loving BloodSugarSexMagic on double vinyl lately.
“Black Summer” is their latest single with John Frusciante back on guitar. This new record should be a treat, and according to Flea, he’s had a profound effect on the band! Unlimited Love is out on April Fools Day and is available for preorder at Warner.
This Dr. Dre track is the best thing Snoop Dogg has done in years. Honestly, the hook is incredible, and he trades lines with Bus-A-Bus like they’ve been spitting together for years. I hope to god there’s another ‘Chronic album in the works?
Shwayze and The Dirty Heads team up this week with a rap reggae number, “Too Late,” that’s perfect for summer. Too bad we are still three months out, at least if you’re living in Chicago.
A quick little hit of hip hop this week courtesy of the Karpenters, which consists of Kool Keith and Grant Shapiro, with a guest spot by Sadat X. It clocks in under a minute but makes you want to check out the rest of the record.
“I’ve got a feeling, a feeling deep inside, oh yeah!” It’s hard to imagine the quality of this rooftop version can be this good, but it is. Paul singing, John and George trading licks, and Ringo keeping the time, it sounds timeless.
I really dig this new track by “Goth Babe.” Griffin Washburn is living the life we all wanted to live but didn’t have the courage to. “Running Around” has an incredible vibe, but wait, you’re telling me he recorded this out of a van?
I’ve been a fan of Yelawolf since Trunk Music, but he’s spread himself too thin over the last two years. He’s made every cameo possible, for better or for worse. But this cut with DJ Paul is super fun, like, should-be-a-hit-on-the-radio-type-song. The title says it all, “If You’re Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough.”
Your Jazz Cut Of The Week is “This Can’t Be Love” by Red Garland. What starts off eclectic and reflective, then turns into a mini-funk jam, with incredible bass lines. Check out the full album, Misty Red, if you have the chance, their version of “My Funny Valentine” is worth your time.
