My family recently discovered this old, hand drawn map of the Wisconsin Dells from the 1970’s. I remember seeing these as a kid in the 80’s and it felt like almost every business had one. I used to love all the little details in this thing and I would study it almost every summer I was in the Dells.
Over 40 years of direct sunlight has left this thing faded and washed out.
It’s such a cool design, but with the poster being in really bad shape it wasn’t something I really wanted to hang up in my house. So I had my aunt send me a photo of the map and I went about recreating it by hand.
I redrew the whole poster using an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil while making sure to keep in all the little details that made the original so awesome. It took me more than 6 months to go from the original to what you see below.
You can see months of work in just a few seconds with the GIF above. In the end it was all worth it because I was able to create a full, high quality, large scale design that I could print, frame, and hang.
Final Product – Restored to all its glory
