Through this transition, there are going to be moving parts. Contreras is going into the final year of his deal so he is in the same position as Bryant, Rizzo, and Baez were at this time last year. It is going to be a big decision made by the team.

Regardless of what happens, the Cubs need to keep building. They have a lot of talent in the Minor Leagues right now as a result of their recent fire sale but they need more. There could be some very good options out there via trade or free agency over the next few years.

Juan Soto could be someone that the Chicago Cubs consider at some point.

Last week, it came out that Juan Soto turned down a 13 year deal worth 350 million dollars from the Washington Nationals. That is an insane amount of money for one player but he can absolutely get more if his career continues on its trajectory. It makes sense why he declined it.

If he and the Nats don’t reach a deal over the next few years, he might become available. They aren’t a good team anymore so they might be looking to rebuild themselves. The Cubs are ahead of them in that aspect but they don’t have a Soto.

He could be someone that the Cubs look at via trade or free agency depending on the timing. He is a top-five player in all of baseball and some might argue that he is even better than that which is totally fair. He would be worth prospects or any kind of money because he is that good.

The Nationals could lock him up on a 500 million dollar contract at any time and that would erase any of this conversation but there will be speculation about his long-term future until that does happen. Either way, it will be an interesting story to follow.
